To the untrained eye, a detailed structural drawing of a typical roof may seem complicated to say the least.
However a detailed drawing consists of only two key roofing basics:
- The support structure
- The outer protective layer
The outer support structure:
This later consists of a network of beams, both ties and struts that are arranged in a system that enables them to carry the weight of the outer layer of the roof.the material used for these beams depends on the weight of the outer roofing material
The outer protective layer
This is the layer that can be seen from the outside. It covers the structure beneath it protecting it from the effects of weather. Aside from protective services, the roof also plays an aesthetic function.
So the next time your Engineer hands you a structural drawing of your roof, you will have an idea of what you're looking at. Then you can worry about more important things, like which roofing material would best suit your structure.
